Mary Eckstein Feiler

Originally from the Arizona desert, Mary Eckstein Feiler met Keith when she came to the University of Alaska in 1991 as a graduate student. She received her MS degree in Geology in 1994. During her graduate years, Mary distinguished herself as an outstanding teacher. Keith always said that Mary was one of the few people whom he felt could serve as a fully qualified guide for Earth Tours.

Knowledge alone does not make great teachers; great teachers are able to easily convey that knowledge to their students, and this is one of Mary's strongest talents. Growing up in Arizona she was drawn to geology and received her B.S. from Arizona State University. She fell in love with teaching as a student instructor earning her M.S. in Geology from University of Alaska. Mary continued to teach geology in northern Arizona, where she worked for the City of Flagstaff's Enrichment program, Northern Arizona University's Elderhostel, Grand Canyon Field Institute, and as an associate faculty member at Coconino Community College (CCC). At CCC, she developed a geology course located entirely in the Grand Canyon. Mary says, "Learning geology in the field really turns the lightbulb on for most students. I can teach a student in 10 minutes what would take me 30 minutes in the classroom." As a Learning Specialist for CCC's Learning Enhancement Center, Mary became immersed in the psychology of learning.

Mary believes people learn better when they have fun, and she has a knack for singing upbeat tunes in the middle of downpours. Her students have been known to break into song themselves after hearing her unabashedly singing showtunes. Be forewarned about her Ethel Merman imitation. Always a lover of the outdoors, she grew up in Phoenix, migrated to Alaska, and now makes her home in Boulder, UT with her family.
